April in Asheville is a popular time of year for weddings, coming into spring the backdrop of the area brightens up with flowers and greenery. The beauty of spring draws people in from all over, but be careful how you pack your bags, because sometimes Old Man Winter comes for an unexpected visit.

When the day of the wedding arrived it came as a huge surprise that by the time the sun went down spring became winter and the ground became white with snow. You never know what to expect in April, but a little unexpected snow can create the most beautiful moments.

Gina wanted a very natural look for her bridal makeup. Soft peach tones for a natural glow and a soft winged liner gives this bride a timeless look.

It’s the first day of 2021 and we figured we would start it off right with a post. We love seeing new trends surface in wedding style. One of our favorites to rise in popularity is the boho wedding. A style that’s a little less formal than a traditional but still full of beauty.

The Dress

Our bride Riley had a stunning boho wedding here in Asheville, NC. She wanted a bohemian theme and it all started with this dress. The dress belonging to her mother was worn in her wedding in the 70’s and was passed down to Riley for this beautiful occasion. Flowing with vintage tiered lace and off the shoulder detail, this dress is boho magic and inspired so many beautiful details for the day.

The hair and makeup for Riley’s wedding was glamorous yet effortless. Riley really enjoyed wearing makeup and wanted to focus on her eyes. We chose a warm smoky eye, with subtle contour to the face and a neutral pink lip. Hair was soft and beautiful, pulling half the hair back with loose waves and a fishtail braid.

Earthy, Ethereal and Elegant

In the end all the elements came together in a beautiful ceremony at the Buck Springs Gap overlook. One of my favorite elements was the rug which Riley found while traveling and used to inspire the color palette for her floral and bridesmaid’s dresses .

Doll Box Beauty offers makeup artists and hair stylists for commercial and film projects. Our team has years of experience working on sets for commercials, short and feature films. Amanda was recently invited to be a part of a short film here in Asheville, NC called “Saving Jake.”

Saving Jake

Local film maker Katie Damien recently contacted our team at Doll Box Beauty to get involved in a project called “Saving Jake.” The film is being created for a local nonprofit called Homeward Bound helping end homelessness in WNC and we were happy to help. Doll Box was on set to design makeup for the role of Jake and support cast. The makeup would reflect the hardships of living on the streets.

The Makeup

Jake’s story would begin living a life on the streets and the makeup would need to reflect. We would need to make Jake appear dirty and tired through the use of makeup. The makeup concept is simple. I began with some basic flesh tones and stippled in earth tone shadows on the face and hands. This creates the appearance of dirt. I also used a mixture of red tone lip shades under the eyes. As a result, we created the look of illness and exhaustion. The images below are from set of “Saving Jake” and support cast.

We recently worked with some of our favorite wedding vendors. On this bridal styled shoot. Co-owner Kristen Calloway was on makeup. The look was classic beauty with a bold lip. The colors pulled the deep tones of fall but still had a bright bridal feel. Fall and winter weddings are a great time to use deeper colors as a contrast to the sometimes moody dark tones of the season.
